Traditional firewalls and proxies were designed 15–20 years ago to combat threats from users accessing the internet, unknown domains, and malicious URLs. However, these solutions are outdated in addressing modern cybersecurity challenges.
While 15-year-old Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) solutions offer better visibility and policy enforcement compared to traditional firewalls and proxies, they are still limited. CASBs can detect various Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)-based activities and enforce more granular policies, but all existing security solutions—including firewalls, proxies, CASB, and Security Service Edge (SSE)—are legacy technologies that struggle to address the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) applications.
The core issue is that these legacy solutions were built to inspect hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) and hypertext transfer protocol secure (HTTPS) traffic, but modern AI applications use a variety of protocols beyond HTTP/HTTPS. AI apps leverage different technologies for different tasks, making traditional inspection methods ineffective.
For example:
- When a user uploads a file to Microsoft 365 Copilot, the app uses HTTPS
- When the same user sends multiple queries and receives responses from Microsoft Copilot, it uses the WebSocket protocol
- Cursor, a widely used AI-powered coding assistant, relies on Protocol Buffers (Protobuf), which is entirely different from traditional HTTPS-based content inspection
As a result, firewalls, proxies, and CASBs fail to detect and prevent threats from emerging AI applications, leaving enterprises vulnerable to data breaches and intellectual property (IP) theft. Taken together, these shortcomings contribute to a growing blind spot filled with uncertain levels of AI-related threats and sensitive data exposure. Organizations need complete visibility for the growing list of AI tools, plus effective security controls to prevent AI-specific threats and keep critical data secure.
The Limitations of Legacy Security for Data Protection and Threat Prevention
Legacy data security solutions were primarily designed to handle insider threats, data loss, and IP theft using 20-year-old data loss prevention (DLP) technology that relies on regex-based detection, leading to thousands of false positives every day. Existing data security tools typically rely on predefined rules and data classification methods, which can’t effectively get the job done for the dynamic ways AI tools interact with users, data, and other AI apps.
Moreover, threat prevention stacks have been commoditized, relying on off-the-shelf URL filtering engines and signature-based threat detection. With AI-powered adversaries leveraging increased speed and computing power, organizations are now more vulnerable than ever. Traditional security solutions cannot keep up, and this is why we’ve built a team with many of the most accomplished cybersecurity veterans around to create Aurascape–a new security platform, engineered from the ground-up for AI interactions.
The Need for a New Security Foundation
With AI powering strong productivity boosts, businesses that allow their workers to safely leverage AI tools will gain a competitive advantage over organizations that fail to do so. That is why the world needs an entirely new security foundation that can:
- Secure enterprises against the rapidly growing list of thousands of generative AI applications, agentic AI, and embedded AI in SaaS and websites
- Protect AI-connected applications such as Copilot, ChatGPT, and AI-driven data indexing tools
- Detect and mitigate AI-specific threats in real-time
So, Why Aurascape?
Blocking AI applications is not an option—they significantly boost productivity, and employees will continue to use them. Furthermore, business leaders actively encourage AI adoption to enhance efficiency.
- 75% of knowledge workers already use AI tools in the workplace
- 1 in 3 employees pay for AI tools out of pocket to use them at work
Organizations must adopt a next-generation security stack that secures AI activities without hindering productivity. This approach empowers employees to use AI tools safely, allowing enterprises to benefit from AI-driven efficiency gains while maintaining strong security controls.
Established by a world-class team with deep expertise in security, AI, and networking, Aurascape clears the way for companies to maximize the potential of AI while minimizing security risk. The Aurascape platform is built specifically to prevent AI-driven threats, protect users and data, and keep teams productive. Many legacy security protocols just aren’t built to deal with the complexities of AI usage, but Aurascape is.
Aurascape’s security platform is purpose-built to secure long-tail AI applications. With:
- Deep protocol decoders for thousands of AI applications
